Building Program: A Legacy of Growth and Renewal

Welcome to our 155-year-old United Methodist Church, a cornerstone of the Columbia, Maryland community since 1876. Originally known as Locust Chapel, our church was an integral part of the Howard Circuit within the Washington Conference, alongside Brown Chapel, Hall Chapel, and Pine Orchard Chapel. The earliest recorded reference to what we now recognize as the Atholton Charge of the Washington Conference dates back to 1892, marking the beginning of our long-standing commitment to faith and service.

Our history reflects a continuous journey of growth and adaptation. In April 1951, the original clapboard church was relocated to a locust grove adjacent to the original site, making way for the construction of a new concrete block structure. This new edifice was celebrated for its beauty and spaciousness; District Superintendent Scott highlighted its significance in his 1954 report to the Washington Annual Conference, noting that "The beautiful, spacious Locust Chapel Church was erected on the Atholton Charge during the year."

As our congregation expanded, the need for more space became evident. We embraced the challenge with a vision for the future. By 2021, prompted by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the pivotal decision to exit our building temporarily. This provided us with the unique opportunity to embark on a major enhancement project, aimed at better serving our community's evolving needs.

Our new addition is a testament to our commitment to growth and community. Completed in the spring of 2024, this state-of-the-art facility includes a large fellowship hall, perfect for gatherings and events. The warming kitchen is designed to support our many communal meals and activities, while the newly added bathrooms, offices, and classrooms ensure that our members and guests experience comfort and convenience.

We are thrilled to have moved back into our newly expanded facility, which now serves as a vibrant hub for worship, fellowship, and community service. This transformation not only honors our rich heritage but also positions us to continue making a meaningful impact for many years to come.

Thank you for being part of this ongoing journey. We invite you to explore our new space and join us in celebrating the next chapter of our church's storied history. Your support and engagement are vital as we continue to grow and serve our community with renewed energy and purpose.
